National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

Working for improvement
Steve Gardiner introduces a slide show on the Top of South America Expedition to Mt. Aconcagua at the Parmly Billings Library. "The most extraordinary thing about a really good teacher is that he or she transcends accepted educational methods. Such methods are designed to help average teachers approximate the performance of good teachers." Margaret Mead

Steve Gardiner has been involved with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards since 1991. His work with the National Board includes:

  • Member of the Adolescent and Young Adult/English Language Arts standards committee from 1991-1997. This committee, composed of Language Arts teachers from across the nation, wrote the standards which teachers must meet to qualify for National Board Certification in AYA/ELA.
  • Writer for the reconstituted Early Adolescent/English Language Arts committee, 1998-1999. This committee revised the standards for EA/ELA candidates and produced the updated standards document.
  • Writer for a Special Supplement edition of Accomplished Teacher magazine in 2001. Steve interviewed eight National Board Certified Teachers about the positive impact they were having on their schools and communities and the resulting articles, some 17,000 words, were published in that edition.
  • In November, 2002, Steve received his own National Board Certification in AYA/ELA.
  • Member of the Development Team for Portfolio Renewal in 2002-2003. This team of fifteen teachers representing several disciplines and geographic areas, created the process and standards for renewing National Board Certification. This process will be used by teachers in all certificate areas who wish to renew as their ten-year certificates expire.
  • Facilitator to recruit and coach National Board candidates through the Montana Education Association.
