The mountain at the far end of the valley is Whitetail Peak in the Beartooth Mountains of Montana. Gardiner climbed it via the steep line of snow up the face.

Sustained Silent Reading.
Steve Gardiner has used sustained silent reading as a keystone in every English class he has taught for the past 28 years. In 2005, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development published his book, Building Student Literacy Through Sustained Silent Reading. His workshop explains the research behind SSR and includes numerous personal experiences with students, parents, teachers and administrators in relation to SSR.

National Board Certification
As a member of three National Board committees, Gardiner started working with the National Board in 1991 and has seen the board certification movement grow from its beginnings. He earned his own certification in 2002 and has helped mentor many other teachers who have received certification. He actively promotes board certification and is particularly interested in the reflection, collaboration, and professional development the certification process inspires.

Six Traits Writing
Gardiner has used the Six Traits Writing model extensively in his English classes and has taught the process to hundreds of students and teachers. His presentation walks learners through a simple method of learning the Six Traits and demonstrates how the model can been used in peer editing situations in a classroom.

Writing for Publication
Having published four books and over 500 articles, Gardiner has years of experience in dealing with editors, writing query letters, matching topics with markets, and preparing manuscripts for publication. He can discuss writing for educational journals or for general interest publications and can help teachers learn how to write for publication and help their students do the same.

The Ascent of Mt. Aconcagua, Argentina
This presentation takes the audience through the preparation, training, traveling and climbing necessary to reach the summit of Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere.

The Ascent of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa
As the highest peak in Africa, Kilimanjaro is a dream climb for many of the world's climbers. Gardiner made the ascent in 2002 and his account includes not only the climb through the rain forest to the summit, but the frightening story having to evacuate his daughter for emergency surgery in Nairobi, Kenya.

North Peary Land, Greenland
Gardiner was a member of both the 1996 American Top of the World Expedition and the 2001 Return to the Top of the World Expedition. As part of these journeys, he participated in the first ascents of 17 unclimbed peaks and the crossing of four untouched glaciers. The 1996 group walked across the sea ice of the Arctic Ocean and discovered a new island which was the northernmost point of land on earth. These expeditons are the subject of the book Under the Midnight Sun.
